Last night on the Simpsons, hipsters invaded Springfield and brought all the modern trappings of their super-trendy lifestyles. In a search for an authentic town, Terrence and his wife (voiced by Portlandia's Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein) bring their artisanal donut trailer Devil Donuts, a riff on Portland's Voodoo Doughnut. They sell donuts with toppings like gummy worms and churro chunks (on trend, they intentionally sell out everyday). Terrence explains why they left: "Portland just got too played out. The city used to be real. Do you know there are now restaurants there with two locations? Not near my kids."
Homer tries to fit in with the hipsters and wears a scarf and a wallet chain. Exclaims Marge, "You look like a barista!" And Moe's Tavern is taken over by hipsters. Says Moe: " Everything crappy about this place they like. Even the rats!" Later, a trend piece in the New York Times calls Springfield "America's Coolest City," and of course the hipsters move on. Don't miss the end credits with Mr. Burns and one of the Mast Brothers explaining their "Artisanal Nuclear Power" business. Music was from the Decemberists. Video and screengrabs below:
